Oxnard Beaches

Back to the beach again this week, but this trail has a much different feel than the one in Long Beach. There is no paved path, just very wide sandy beach. Although I crossed over several beaches sitting in front of large houses and condos, I encountered few people.  I began at Channel Islands Harbor and hiked up the coast over Hollywood Beach, Oxnard Beach, Oxnard Shores, Mandalay State Beach, finally coming to McGrath Lake which sits right next to the ocean.
Distance: About 8 miles

Long Beach Oceanfront Trail

With our recent rains in mind I searched for a place that wouldn’t demand trudging through slippery mud. This paved bike/pedestrian path in Long Beach fit the bill nicely. The beach is sometimes loud and bright. Today it was mostly quite foggy.   Particularly early morning, I felt as if I were being wrapped in a soothing blanket of fog.  This seemed to have a calming effect on everyone.  We walked and passed, in friendly silence, as if acting out some unspoken agreement.  Every few minutes the silence was broken by the loud but pleasantly resonant blast of a nearby foghorn.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 8.5 to 9 miles

Deer Creek Road

I had a different hike planned but couldn’t sleep the night before. After finally getting some rest I got my gear together and set out for this short trail which parallels Deer Creek Road. Deer Creek Road is located off of Pacific Coast Highway just up the coast from County Line Beach and down the coast a short drive from Point Mugu. This trail is shown on the latest version of Tom Harrison’s “Point Mugu” map. The views here are outstanding and there’s a nice uphill return so it’s almost like a full day of hiking.
Distance: 3 to 3.5 miles out and back
