I had an extra day off so I went a little out of the way – a hike in Montecito. As I hike in this area again I am sure I will learn the landmarks. For now I will only guess, but the views from above possibly include Point Mugu, the city of Santa Barbara and UCSB.
My first hike in the Verdugo Mountains was very tough. The first part, a two mile climb up Wildwood Canyon Trail and Vital Link Trail, wasted me. I had read online about how steep these trails were and found this to be accurate. I explored and hiked around once I got to the top and the whole hike ended up being just under 10 miles. I got lost on the drive home. Thank you to the kind souls who put me on the right path.
After a false start and then a wrong turn, this 10 mile hike became 13 miles. I was lucky the weather was so cool. The ridge half was pretty tough and the return through the canyon was easy.
Great hike in Thousand Oaks. Los Robles Trail is long. This is the central segment, about a 7 1/2 mile out and back. Expanding my hiking range paid off today. As I looked out at the hills and mountains that lay in front of me I was able to pick out several places where I have hiked or could otherwise identify. The trail is pretty well used, more so by mountain bikers than hikers on this day. Just about everyone was cool but a couple came screaming down the mountain and neither of us had much time to react. I look forward to hiking in this area again very soon.
