This is the first time I have started at the top of Corral Canyon. The more popular hike here is to Castro Crest along the Backbone Trail. Instead I started on the higher road, Castro Peak Motorway, and then down Bulldog Motorway into Malibu Creek State Park. This is a scenic area with interesting rock formations.
I have hiked in this area many times but today had a couple of new twists. First, I parked off of Kanan Dume Road. I have driven past it a million times but only recently noticed this trailhead. Also, I explored two side trails off the main trail. It was a warm day and I baked under the Sun for lack of cover.
Point Mugu State Park, Circle X Ranch and all the mountains within, hiking in this area is always a pleasure. This sunny day was made comfortable by cool breezes. I hiked for hours and kind of lost my place on the map. I completed the hike in about seven hours. I didn’t see another person all day.
I began my hike at Trippet Ranch. This is a nice area but maybe a tad busy. The trails I hiked included Musch Trail, Eagle Springs Fire Road, East Topanga Fire Road and the Nature Trail near the parking lot – a total of about six miles. The highlight was Eagle Rock, a massive sandstone rock which can be explored at the top.
