Another hike off of Mulholland Highway and right across from Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek State Park. This one runs in the opposite direction. I hadn’t given it any thought but right before my hike I wondered why they call this “Phantom” Trail. Alas, I saw no phantoms. The hike was a pleasant one and well marked.
Kind of a strange hike. On my map Pentachaeta Trail is a two mile out and back. Westlake Vista Trail isn’t on my map and I only discovered it existed when I was scouting trailhead locations. When I did a search for Westlake Vista Trail I found a route that someone had “recorded” on their GPS. The route connected the two trails and made a large loop. That sounded perfect. When I tried to hike this route I found out why it isn’t on the map.
Today was a short hike, around five miles. This pleasant little trek had a lot of character but maybe too much human intrusion. Power lines next to the trail and views from above were compromised by busy Las Virgenes Road, a lot of condos, the freeway and a landfill. I didn’t feel the encroachment necessarily overwhelmed the hike, however. All in all an enjoyable day.
