Nicholas Flat – Malibu Springs

This trail is right next to Yellow Hill Fire Road in Leo Carrillo State Park, but is a lot longer and more challenging hike.  The first half is in State Park territory, well maintained if not well signed.  The second half is run by the National Park Service and feels more remote and less well traveled, as the condition of the trail reflects.  A good hike overall, but very tough as well.

Point Mugu: La Jolla Trail, etc,

Another long hike in the Point Mugu area.  The first was 17 miles, this one about 13.  There are a lot of trails in this area so I only had to repeat about one mile of road from my first hike.  There was wind from the moment I stepped out of the car, gusts that had to be 50 MPH.  I didn’t mind.  It meant I had the place to myself.

Hondo Canyon / Topanga Lookout

Had an awesome day.  The trails I hiked – Hondo Canyon Trail, Fossil Ridge Trail and the road up to Topanga Lookout were pretty empty.  I was freezing for the first ten minutes but warmed up as I climbed up some rocky, sometimes steep or slightly treacherous terrain.  This hike had excellent views and a few oddities that made it fun.
